All Praise To You, Eternal Lord

Glad Today's song comes from the pen of Martin Luther.  In addition to being a reformer and theologian, the ex-monk had a passion for music and especially congregational singing.  The best version of this song that I know of is on one of my favorite Christmas cds put out by GLAD called Voices of Christmas.  It is excellent and you can find it by clicking here.

All praise to You, Eternal Lord,
Clothed in a garb of flesh and blood;
Choosing a manger for Your throne,
While worlds on worlds are Your's alone.

The skies did once before You bow;
A virgin’s arms, they hold You now,
Angels who did in You rejoice,
Now listen for Your infant voice.

O, little Child, You are our Guest,
That weary ones in You may rest;
Humble and lowly is Your birth;
That we may rise to Heaven from earth.

You come to us in darkest night
To make us children of the light;
To make us, in the realms divine,
Like Your own angels round You shine.

All this for us Your love has done;
By this to You our love is won;
We sing of grace and your glorious ways,
And shout our thanks in endless praise.

Orphans in Constitucion Singing

This is a video from our mission trip last month of the orphans in Constitucion singing a song during the Friday night worship service.  I recorded it with my digital camera so the quality is not the greatest, but I wanted to post a reminder to pray for the kids as Jenny White returns back to the States tomorrow.

How Sweet the Day

 I'm going to try to post some Christmas songs and hymns each day leading up to Christmas.  I'd encourage you to use these in your time in the Word.  You can purchase or listen to a portion of it here, or just sing these words to the tune of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel."  It's called, How Sweet the Day.

1. How sweet the day when Christ was born
When God Himself took human form
He came to wash our sins away
Our death to die, our debt to pay

2. How sweet the day when Hope appeared
The One who frees us from our fears
He came to break the power of sin
And give us power to follow Him

Chorus
Oh sing for joy, lift up your voice
Let us sing for joy, the whole earth rejoice
Let us sing for joy to the Son
For Jesus our Savior has come

3. How sweet the day when Christ returns
We’ll see the One for whom we yearn
Then we’ll look full upon His face
Our hearts will burst with songs of praise

Come, Lord Jesus, come

Book Recommendations

So much to blog about and so little time...  So, here are the promised book suggestions for those still unsure about what to get that special someone.  I'll provide some general recommendations and also some more gender specific titles.  All of the links are to amazon.com because they usually have the cheapest price, but you can find them at Lifeway, Family Christian Store, Mardel, Mongergism, or anywhere fine Christian books are sold.:)

Faithful_witness

William Carey is one of my heroes, and Faithful Witness: The Life and Missoin of William Carey is one of my favorite books.  In fact, I've been working up the courage to dress up for our church's Fall Festival as William Carey for several years.  He was a true pioneer, taking the Gospel and translating the Bible in India- truly willing to forsake all for the sake of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  The author of this biography, Timothy George, is an engaging writer and does great justice to the life of this great man of God.

Polishing_2

                                                                                                      Polishing God's Monuments is a book every person should read.  Jim Andrews tells the story of his daughter's brutal, ongoing bout with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and the faith that has sustained their family through the enduring trials.  He interweaves theology and narrative skillfully and so provides rich teaching with a compelling story of biblical hope in the midst of nearly unimaginable pain.

Gospelevangelismdever

                                                                                                                                                                                                                   The Gospel and Personal Evangelism is a short, but insightful book on the who, how, what and why of evangelism.  Mark Dever writes in an unassuming, and very accessible way, reminding readers of the joy that comes when we are faithful to tell the great story of God's love in sending His Son.  I was convicted of my lack of faithfulness and encouraged to share the Gospel more.  A great book.

For Women (Books Becky has enjoyed):

Feminineappeal
Carolyn Mahaney identifies with the challenges facing women in today’s world and meets them with the guidance of God’s Word. The feminine virtues described in Titus 2 have transformed her life and the lives of countless other women. This book will show you the appeal of being a woman who lives for God and helps others do the same. (I stole this description from amazon.com, but Becky has read Feminine Appeal and can't recommend it highly enough.  She's passed her copy to other friends, and even ordered several to give away.)

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         As Becky and I have been thinking through our traditions (and often lack of them) and how they can help point us and Bethany to Christ, this book has been very helpful.  If you are looking for tangible ways to help express and pass on your faith to your kids through birthdays, Christmas, Easter, every day life, etc... Treasuring God in Our Traditions is an excellent book.

On Marriage:

Sinnerssay

                                                                                                                                                                                                              When Sinners Say "I Do" is the best book on marriage that I've come across.  It is a reminder of the shortcomings of our spouses (and even more ourselves) and of the power of the Gospel to transform marriage int o a reflection of the love Christ has for the church.  Read this book together and your marriage will be helped.  If you'd like to try it out first, I know there is a copy in the library at our church.

For Men:

Sexromance
There is such a stigma when it comes to talking about sex at church (for most).  However, God designed it and even included a whole book about it in the Old Testament.  Sex, Romance, and the Glory of God is grounded in the Song of Solomon and gives great advice to husbands on how to love their wives.  There is also a chapter written to wives at the end of the book.  Trust me- you'll be glad you purchased this book (for yourself or wives, for your husband).

That's all for now.  Feel free to give your suggestions as well.  Happy reading!

CD Recommendations for Christmas Gifts

A few people have asked for cd recommendations for Christmas.  So, here are a few that I whole heartedly recommend to you:

Savior_cd
I love new Christmas music (as well as traditional Christmas music) and Savior is chock full of new songs about the Incarnation.  Theologically rich, and easy on the ears, I give this two enthusiastic thumbs up.

Micheal_gungor

Michael Gungor is a fantastic guitarist and arranger.  I'm particularly fond of Prodigal Son, Grace for Me, and Fly.  To find a review of the cd, click here.

West_coast_revival
This is West Coast Revival's first long play cd, and well worth a listen.  They have an eclectic mix of styles on the cd, but describe themselves as "alternative rock with a California twist."  Simple Fix, and Wonders of Christ Crucified are two excellent examples of their commitment to lyrical depth, but also their understanding of man's plight with sin.

Our_god_saves Paul Baloche has written many well known songs in the church and songs that we sing in our services- Open the Eyes of My Heart Lord, Arise, All the Earth Will Sing Your Praises,  and Offering.  His newest offering, Our God Saves, illustrates a desire to be more theologically grounded and Gospel-centered in its content.  Rock of Ages You Will Stand and I Cling to the Cross are excellent starting places to get a feel for this "praise and worship" cd.

Later this week I'll give a few book recommendations for all you last minute shoppers (including myself...).

Movie Review- The Golden Compass

The_golden_compass You may have already heard of much of the controversy surrounding the move, The Golden Compass.  My initial thought was that this may be unfounded.  Let's be honest- the "Christian community" has been too quick to jump on the band wagon in the past and create a good deal of negative attention over small issues.  That being said, I think that the hubbub over The Golden Compass is well grounded and something that Christians should educate themselves about before going to the movie theater or sending your teenage child to the theater with their friends.  I'd like to point you to an article by Al Mohler, who has done extensive homework about the intentions of the author, Philip Pullman.  He sites several quotes  about the author's surprise that there hasn't been more controversy from his books, who's end is to bring down the church and kill God.  You can read the entire article here.
